Fitment is the whole job
A system that hangs wrong will rub, resonate or crack. Alignment, hanger geometry and clearance to everything around it are the difference between a system that is quiet at cruise and one that drones for the life of the car.
When custom makes sense
Off-the-shelf systems exist for popular platforms and are usually the right answer. Custom work earns its place when the platform is unusual, the car has been modified past what a bolt-on system expects, or the goal is specific enough that no off-the-shelf part meets it.
