A race car is not a street car with parts on it. It is a set of systems that have to work together under load, inside a rulebook, without failing in a way that hurts somebody.
We build complete race cars and prepare street cars to run at the strip. Where a build starts depends on the car and the goal — some come in as a shell, some arrive as a running street car that needs to be made safe, consistent and quick.
Class rules decide what is allowed long before preference does, and safety equipment requirements tighten as the car gets quicker. The build gets planned against the rules the car will actually run under, so time and money are not spent on something that will not pass tech.
Making the number is straightforward. Putting it down, repeatedly, on a surface that changes through the day is the part that decides whether the car is any good. Traction, weight transfer, fuel system and the driveline all have to be planned together — which is why a build gets sequenced rather than bolted on one part at a time.
Plenty of these cars are driven on the street as well. That constraint changes the answer on almost every component, and it is worth being honest about it up front rather than discovering it later.
