Suspension & Chassis

Springs, dampers, geometry and the parts that decide whether the car hooks or spins.

Power is only worth what the car can put on the ground. On a street/strip car, suspension is about weight transfer, keeping the tire loaded, and doing the same thing on every pass.

Setup decides the sixty-foot

The first sixty feet are where a run is won or lost, and they are almost entirely a suspension and tire problem. Shock valving, ride height, preload and sway bar settings determine how the car transfers weight when the throttle goes down and whether it stays hooked once it does.

Consistency over one good pass

Anyone can get one run to stick. A car that repeats within a few hundredths, pass after pass, was set up right rather than getting lucky.

It still has to drive home

Most of these cars are street driven. Suspension that works at the track and is miserable on the road is a bad trade, and there is usually more room to have both than people expect, as long as the compromise is made on purpose.

What this covers

  • Coilover, shock and strut installation
  • Control arms, links and bushings
  • Anti-roll bar and instant-centre adjustment
  • Ride height and weight transfer setup
  • Alignment after suspension work
